Jonathan's Baptism:
From Parish record1812.
This bastardy petition, heard in Preston on 4th April 1812, may or may not relate to 'our' Jonathan.
However, he seems to have been the only man of this name in the area at this time who could fit the bill.
Whereas complaint hath been made unto us, two of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace and Quorum in and for the said County of Lancaster, residing next unto the Limits of the Parish Church of Bispham within the Parish of Bispham, in the said county, by the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Township of Layton with Warbrick in the parish and county aforesaid, which is yet living and chargeable to the said Township of Layton with Warbrick. that Ellen Fisher single woman hath lately been delivered of a female Bastard child, in the said Township of Layton with Warbrick, in the Parish and County aforesaid.
And whereas the said Ellen Fisher this day came voluntarily of her own free will and record before us, and then and thereupon her Examination upon Oath did declare, that the said Ellen Fisher was upon the eighth day of February last, delivered of a female Bastard Child, in the said township of Layton with Warbrick in the said Parish and County, which said Child is now living in and heretofore hath been and still is chargeable to the said Township of Layton with Warbrick and likely to continue, and that Jonathan Whiteside, husbandman, of Layton with Warbrick aforesaid, did Beget the said Bastard on her body and is the father of the same.
And whereas the said Jonathan Whiteside hath been duly summoned to appear before us the said Justices to the end that upon the Examination of the Cause and Circumstances of the Premises, we might take such order as to right doth appertain; and he having appeared before us but not shewed any sufficient Cause why he should not be adjudged the reputed father of the said bastard child.
We therefore, the said Justices, upon due Examination and Consideration of the Premises, as well upon the Oath of the said Ellen Fisher, as otherwise do hereby declare and adjudge that the said Child was born a Bastard upon the body of the said Ellen Fisher in the said Township of Layton with Warbrick in the Parish and County aforesaid, and is now living, and heretofore hath been and still is chargeable to the said township of Layton with Warbrick and that the said Jonathan Whiteside is the father of the said bastard child.
Thereupon we order that as well for the better Relief of the said Township of Layton with Warbrick as for the Sustentation and Relief of the said Bastard Child, that the said Jonathan Whiteside shall and do forthwith upon the Notice of this our order, pay or cause to be paid unto the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Township of Layton with Warbrick, or to some one of them, the sum of two pounds six shillings for and towards the charges and Expenses incident to the birth of the said Bastard Child, and the maintenance of the said Bastard Child from the time of her birth, to the time of our making of this order, and further sum of four shillings for and towards the cost of apprehending and securing the said Jonathan Whiteside, and the sum of thirteen shillings for and towards the costs of this Order of Filiation; such charges, expenses, costs, and sums of money respectiely have been duly ascertained on oath before us the said Justices to be reasonable.
And we do likewise hereby further Order that the said Jonathan Whiteside shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said township of Layton with Warbrick, or to some one of them, for the time being, the Sum of two shillings weekly and every Week from this present Time, for and towards the Keeping, Sustenance and Maintenance of the said Bastard Child, for and during so long time as the same shall be chargeable to the said Township of Layton with Warbrick.
And we do hereby further order that the said Ellen Fisher shall likewise well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Township of Layton with Warbrick or some one of them for the time being, the Sum of two shillings weekly and every Week from henceforth so long as the said Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Township of Layton with Warbrick, in case she shall not nurse or take care iof the said Child herself.
Given under our Hands and Seals at Preston in the County of Lancaster, this fourth Day of April in the 52nd Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight Hundred and twelve.

John was widowed in 1913 and moved to Garston where, presumably, he came across the recently widowed Alice Whiteside. As a shuttlemaker, he would have been drawn by the thriving Wilson Brothers Bobbin Co. Graces Guide to British Industrial History. Opens in a new tab or window.
Between 1920 and 1930, Alice and John Crossley are found in the electoral register for 39 Brunswick Street, Garston.
John died in the first quarter of 1931 and it seems that Alice finally moved back to live in Fleetwood, where she died a few months later.
