Richard was born on 15th June 1858. His birth certificate shows his father as Thomas Abbot, (note the spelling, with one t), an agricultural labourer. His mother was Sarah Abbot. They lived at Smithy Bank, Garston. (Kettle Nook).

Richard was baptised on 20th June 1858, in Garston, (Chapelry of Garston, Parish of Childwall.)
