Dave's Ancestors - Gerrard Family

The Gerrard Family

The name Gerrard has appeared in many forms on various documents. The most obvious variant is Gerard, but Garrad and Jerratt have also been found. One common mis-transcription of Gerrard is 'Genard' - all of which has made the search for this family more interesting. For simplicity, I shall stick to Gerrard, unless quoting from an original source.

Further details of Dave's direct Gerrard ancestors.

The following sections contain details transcribed from documents such as census, birth, marriage and death certificates, parish records, newspapers, etc.

Unless otherwise stated, we have transcribed directly from the original document or from a scanned or photographic image of the original document.

John Gerrard.

I know nothing about John Gerrard yet, other than a mention as Samuel's father on his second marriage certificate, in 1841.

Samuel Gerrard

In Brief:

In detail:

Samuel's First marriage.

I have not yet confirmed Samuel's first marriage.
One which might fit the bill, is a marriage between a Samuel Gerrard, weaver, and Elizabeth Fazakerly, widow, on 25th January 1819, at Farnworth.
[This would mean a change of career for Samuel, who is described as a labourer at the baptisms of his first three children in 1819, 1823 and 1828, then as a brewer on later documents.]

Children of Samuel's first marriage.

First child: William, baptised on 5th December 1819, St Mary, St Helens.
Second child: Thomas, baptised on 8th June 1823, St Mary, St Helens.
Third child: Ann, born on 11th August 1828, baptised on 7th September 1828, St Helens.

Samuel Gerrard, age 42, Brewer.
Thomas Gerrard, age 18, glass m. Ap.(Glass maker's apprentice?)
Ann Gerrard, age 10.

Samuel's Second Marriage:

Samuel Gerrard married Margaret Tarbuck on 21st November 1841 in the Parish Church, Prescot. Both were of full age. Samuel was a widower from Windle and Margaret a spinster from ?Parr?.
Samuel's father was John Gerrard, labourer.
Margaret's father was Thomas Tarbuck, labourer.
Witnesses were Francis? Howard? (looks more like Doward), and Thomas Jones.

Samuel is later described as a brewer on the marriage certificate of his son, William, in 1842.

Samuel's fourth child:

Samuel Gerrard, son of Samuel Gerrard and Margaret, was baptised on 18th April 1847 at St Mary, St Helens.
His father lived in St Helens and was a labourer.
