The 1851 and 1881 census has him born in Pennant, Montgomeryshire. The 1871 census return has him born in Llangynog. (The 1861 census has him born in Anglesey, which is an unexplained anomaly.) A likely baptism for John, in Pennant Melangell, took place on 20th July 1800. If this is the correct John, his parents were Robert Roberts and Mary.
(John's own children include both a Robert and a Mary.)

They travelled to Pennsylvania, presumably joining the numerous other Welsh immigrants who had moved there to work in the emerging mining and iron working industries.
Their son, John William, was born in Pennsylvania on 28th August 1889.
They returned to Britain before 1891 and lived for a short while in Lancashire, before returning to Wales.
