John Hand (1899 - 1971).[ John married Doris May Bibby (1898 - 1980) [daughter of William Bibby (1861) and Mary Alice Rowland (1860)] on 26th June 1924. Their children: Doris (1925 - 1994), Elsie (1928 - 2028), John (1931 - 1985). John Hand (Snr) died in October 1971.]
Alice Hand (1902 - 1941).[Born 25th April 1902. Baptised on 16th July 1902, St Peter, Liverpool. Became a single mother, of Mary Hand (1924 - 1997). Married in 1934 to Daniel Evans (1892 - ~1940).
Alice Evans, née Hand, of Cornwall Street, died, aged 38, on 3rd May 1941 at Mill Road infirmary. (Alice's daughter, Mary Hand, married in 1948 to Roland Caig (1924 -1992) and had two children, Alan and Barbara.)]

We know little of the life of James and Mary Hand.
They were born in Ireland at the end of the 18th century. The 1851 census suggests that James was born in 1798, Mary in 1796. Mary's burial record suggests a birth date of 1793.
James and Mary had at least one son, Bernard, who was born in Ireland about 1834/5.
At Bernard's wedding on 3rd September 1855 in Liverpool, Bernard described his father as a labourer.
We suspect that the Hand family had settled in Manchester in the late 1830s on arrival from Ireland. It is likely that their son Bernard met his future wife, Margaret, here.

Bernard was born in Ireland. His parents were James and Mary, but as yet little is known of his past or when the family arrived in England.
It would seem that the family first settled in the Manchester area, where Bernard may have met his future wife, Margaret Street.
Margaret Street, was daughter of George Street, widower, and Ellen Clarke, who were married on 28th March 1825 at Manchester Cathedral.
At this time, George was a callenderer. [Street has variants, Streets or Streett, on some documents.]
